Journal Mosaic: a private journal that opens straight to the page

Most journalling apps ask who you are before they let you write a word. Journal Mosaic opens on the editor, with the cursor already in it, and asks for an account only when you want to keep what you wrote.

Journal Mosaic is our own app, free on the web, the App Store and Google Play. The product page has the full feature list.

Write before you sign up

The app opens on a blank page with the cursor in it. No sign-up wall, no tour, nothing to read first. You can write a full entry, format it with headings, lists and quotes, or dictate it instead of typing, before you have an account at all. Dictation is free and works on the web, on Android and on iPhone.

When you do want to keep it, your draft stays on the page while you make a free account, and then saves as your first entry. That is the whole of the sign-up: the writing comes first, and the account exists to sync it between your devices.

The habit is the hard part

Nobody stops journalling because the editor was wrong. They stop because three days went by.

So the app leans on the few things that keep a practice going: a daily reminder at a time you choose, delivered as a notification with a different prompt each day of the week; a streak and a seven-day strip across the top of your journal, so you can see at a glance whether today is written; and On This Day, which brings back entries from the same date in earlier years. Search, filters by tag, mood or date range, and an export you keep are all on the free plan.

A companion that has read what you wrote

The Reflect tab is a conversation with a companion that draws on your recent entries, not only the one in front of you. Ask what themes keep coming back, how your mood has shifted, or what is giving you energy and what is draining it, and the answer quotes your own writing back at you. Any reply can become a new entry with one tap.

You choose how it talks: Listener is reflective, Coach is direct, Guide is calm, Muse is playful. The same choice shapes the writing coach, which gives feedback on a highlighted passage or a whole entry. Turn on analysis before saving and each entry gets a suggested mood, an emoji, tags you can filter by, and a tone breakdown; you always have the final say.

Free accounts get ten companion messages a week. Mosaic Pro removes the limit and adds a weekly reflection on the themes and moods of the last seven days.

The entries you do not want read

Some writing is not for an algorithm, or for us. Mark an entry for the Private Vault and its text, along with the list of any media on it, is encrypted on your device with a password only you know, before anything is stored. We hold the scrambled form.

Private entries are never analysed, never sent to the companion, never turned into media, and can never be shared. Exports contain only the encrypted form, and your vault password is never included. It is on the free plan, because the people who most need it are not the ones most likely to pay.

When a memory deserves a picture

Three optional tools turn an entry into something you can look at or hear: artwork in a style such as watercolour, cinematic or anime; a short looping video; and an ambient music track. Each one opens a dialog where you review the prompt, pick a model, and see the exact credit cost before anything is generated. If a model declines a prompt, the app says so plainly and charges nothing.

Writing and reflection never cost credits. The free plan includes five to try, and Mosaic Pro includes sixty-four a month.

A community you opt into, one entry at a time

The Mosaic is a shared feed, and nothing reaches it unless you send it. You can post under a name or anonymously, and share the writing without its photos, video or recordings, so the words travel and the pictures stay yours. Readers can react with emoji and leave plain-text comments.

Shared entries are checked automatically before they appear. Any post or comment can be reported with a reason, and anyone can be blocked: their posts and comments disappear for you, and they can no longer comment on or react to yours.

Free, and what Pro adds

The journal is free, and free covers a real practice: unlimited writing, sync across devices, the Private Vault, one journal, 500 MB for media, reminders and streaks, search and export, mood and tone analysis, the writing coach, dictation, community sharing, ten companion messages a week and five creative credits.

Mosaic Pro is $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year. It adds unlimited companion conversations, voice memos of up to three minutes that stay with the entry and are transcribed into it, unlimited journals, the weekly reflection, 5 GB of storage, and sixty-four creative credits every month.

Where it runs

Any modern browser, Android, and now iPhone and iPad on iOS 15 or later. One free account syncs the same journal across all of them. There is no Mac, Windows or Apple Watch app; on a computer, the journal runs in the browser.

We do not use your entries to train AI models, and the AI providers we use process your content only to return the result you asked for. Our Google Gemini use is on a paid tier, under terms where Google does not use prompts or responses to improve its models.
